What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It provides a simple way to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
BMI Calculation Formula
The standard BMI formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))²
Or for imperial measurements:
BMI = (weight (lbs) / (height (in))²) × 703
BMI Categories
Category | BMI Range |
---|---|
Underweight | Below 18.5 |
Normal weight | 18.5 - 24.9 |
Overweight | 25 - 29.9 |
Obesity | 30 and above |
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:
- Doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat
- May misclassify muscular individuals as overweight
- Doesn't account for fat distribution
- May not be accurate for certain ethnic groups
- Less accurate for very tall or short individuals
Health Risks Associated with BMI
High BMI Risks
Higher BMI values are associated with increased risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Certain cancers
- Sleep apnea
Low BMI Risks
Low BMI may indicate:
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Osteoporosis
- Decreased immune function
- Reproductive issues
Important Note
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. Consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive health assessment.
